Recap – Criteria, Judging Process

When considering the results of any awards program, it is quite important to take into account the criteria which determined the eligibility of the entrants and the process by which the judges arrived at their decision.

For this particular Bike of the Year program, the criteria included:-

  • The motorcycle being a current production model.
  • Motorcycle is new or is an updated model.
  • On sale in the Australian market before 1 September in the year of judging. For this year the time frame was 1 September 2021 through to 1 September 2022.
  • Tested by the team at bikesales before the announcement of finalists.

The team note that these criteria excluded a number of popular models that many may have expected to be in contention because: they didn’t have sufficient new upgrades to meet the eligibility; were not available for sale in time; or had not undergone testing by the team.

But despite a few exclusions, the team were still left with an impressive field of new motorcycles to narrow down to the 10 finalists. These were covered in our recent article or those interested can refer to the bikesales websites for more information as to why each finalist made the cut.

Then the process comes down to the final stage – deciding on a winner. That process involves not one but an impressive panel of judges, each of whom is respected as an expert in the motorbike field. The judging covers a week of road tests in the high country of Victoria plus a lot of analysing and discussions amongst the group.
