Finke Desert Race News
For those keen to test their off-road riding skills, entries are open for the Finke Desert Race. This is a 2 day, multi-terrain race for both cars and bikes and has an impressive reputation as one of the most challenging off-road courses and is held in one of the remotest places on the planet.
The event is set to take place over the King’s Birthday weekend of 9-12 June and covers 452klm. Last year the organisers introduced minimum riding standards for competitors and these standards will apply in 2023.
Last year there were over 550 competitors in the bike category alone. Some previous winners including an Alice Springs fan favourite, David Walsh, will be returning. In achieving the King of the Desert crown in 2022, Walsh smashed the record.
Organisers are expecting a strong field for 2023.
Jack’s Back for Moto GP 2023
The 2023 Moto GP kicks off in a few weeks and Aussie favourite Jack Miller will be in the mix once again. The 2023 schedule includes at least 42 races, with 777 points to be earned. The Saturday afternoon on each GP weekend will include sprint races of 12 laps. These races have half the number of points available for the main race.
There are some changes to practice and qualis also. Fridays will not have two practice sessions. The top 10 riders with combined times from these sessions will go straight into qualifying 2. A third practice session on a Saturday morning and two 15-minute qualifying sessions will determine the final grid. This grid will be for starting the sprint race as well as the main event race on Sunday.
GP 1 will be held in Portugal on 27 March followed by Argentina on April 2. Catch up with the rule changes, rider lists and other details at the official website.

Motorcycle Finance Update
If planning to enter the Finke Desert Race on a new machine, take advantage of the current sales or just feel it’s time for an upgrade, we can assist with bike finance options. Interest rates have been the big news in all areas of finance, including motorbike loans, for most of the past year. The Reserve Bank has lifted rates now 10 times in a row and indicated further rises will likely be expected to be needed.
The next meeting of the RBA Board to make that decision is on the first Tuesday in April. The markets expected that there would be another rise. But some issues have arisen which some analysts feel puts an April rise in doubt.
The collapse of a Silicon Valley Bank and other developments overseas may impact the decision. Closer to home, the February unemployment figures will also be of consideration by the Board. The unemployment rate fell on the February figures as released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics on 16 March. The RBA takes into account inflation, the labour market and international economic issues when making its decision.
